SHILLONG, May 6 (NNN): The Meghalaya unit of BJP has sought the intervention of the Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan for extending the last date to apply for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
In a letter to Pradhan, Ernest Mawrie, who is the president of Meghalaya unit of BJP, said, “We request you to kindly extend the last date so as to enable as many students as possible to register for the same.” He also said the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is planning to implement the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) from the forthcoming academic session for all colleges affiliated with it. All the colleges in Meghalaya are affiliated with NEHU.
The BJP leader then said that the implications of this decision are that all the students who pass class XII this year, in order to get admission in any college in Meghalaya should pass the CUET-UG. Mawrie, however, said that many of the local students in the state are unaware of this new development.
“The situation that will arise is that no student in the whole state will be eligible for admission to BA, BCom, BSc and other undergraduate courses. Most of them would not have applied to appear for the test since the last date is April 30, 2022,” he added.
He further stated that even if they manage to apply at the last moment, it would be difficult for them to give the examination since there is only one online exam centre in Shillong and none in any other town. The number of Class XII-passed students will be too high to be accommodated in the exam centre.
The BJP leader then warned that there will be a big crisis in June-July, which is the time when the admission process is normally carried on in the colleges. “There is even danger of serious breakdown of law and order,” he further added.
