AIZAWL, Mar 15: Mizoram state government is considering relinquishing its single airport, Lengpui Airport, near Aizawl, to Airports Authority of India (AAI), according to an official on Friday.
The decision was being under contemplation at the top level in the government whether to choose to hand over management and operations to the airport in the interest of the airport.
The state’s Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, recently met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the matter. Shah proposed that the state government hand over the airport to AAI. The Mizoram government then decided to consult the Union Home Ministry and the Civil Aviation Ministry in detail before taking a final call.
In his speech to the state assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister Lalduhoma reiterated that Shah had brought in the proposal for transferring Lengpui airport to the AAI. The state government is inclined towards the transfer, and even opposition parties and the majority of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have supported the move. This coming together of views from political parties as well as social organizations is a general consensus in favor of the transfer.
Earlier, the Mizoram state government was getting ready to prepare a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to transfer Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The idea of transfer was opposed by parties like the Mizo National Front (MNF), the Congress, and other parties.
In the view of the opposition, giving the airport to the IAF might not be beneficial for the state or its people.
