IMPHAL, Jan 20 (NNN): Contractual staff of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur commenced their indefinite pen-down strike from Friday, demanding regularisation of their services among others.

On day one of the strike, the contractual staff staged a sit-in-protest in front of the administrative block inside the NIT campus at Langol in Imphal on Friday.

Placards displayed at the protest site read as “We demand our job security”, “Absorb long suffering contractual staff,” etc.

Talking to reporters, a contractual staff said that there are 62 contractual staff in the NIT serving in various capacities since the very inception of the institute against only 10 regular staff.

They have been serving the institute since the very inception in 2010. Despite their priceless contribution in the development of the NIT and repeated pleas, the higher authorities are yet to consider regularization of their services, he lamented.

The contractual staff drew the attention of the Union minister of state for education, RK Ranjan to look into the matter as the institute is under the Union ministry of Education.
