GUWAHATI, Oct 3: Railways has reported strong passenger and freight traffic following the commissioning of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram and the start of freight operations from Molvom in Nagaland.
Officials said the early response highlights the growing confidence of people and businesses in railways as a vital driver of connectivity and development in the Northeast.
Passenger train services from Sairang, launched on September 13, have recorded heavy bookings.
The Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express registered 162.5 per cent occupancy, while the return service from Delhi to Sairang recorded 158.3 per cent.
The Guwahati–Sairang Express achieved 100.1 per cent occupancy, with sleeper class fully booked, and the return service maintained almost 100 per cent.
The newly introduced Kolkata service also drew high demand.
The Sairang–Kolkata Express recorded nearly 100 per cent occupancy, while the Kolkata–Sairang Express achieved 144.8 per cent, with sleeper class touching around 144 per cent.
On the freight side, eight rakes were unloaded at Sairang station till September 30.
The first rake, carrying 21 wagons of cement from STAR Cement Siding near Guwahati, arrived on September 14, followed by consignments of stone chips, automobiles, RMC and sand.
The first parcel consignment from Sairang, comprising Anthurium flowers, was dispatched to Delhi on September 19 through the Rajdhani Express.
Molvom station in Nagaland also began freight operations in September.
Its first inward rake of 41 wagons of cement from Telangana arrived on September 24, followed by the first outward rake on September 29, when 42 wagons of stone chips were loaded for Jirania.
Officials said the surge in both passenger and freight services underlines the transformative role of railway connectivity in the region, bringing economic opportunities, better market access for local products and improved mobility.
