AGARTALA, Sept 1: Former Tipra Motha Chairman, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, called for strict action against those responsible for the vandalism of a Kali Maa idol in Ranirbazar, West District, which occurred on August 26.
Debbarma, after visiting the home of late Chiranjit Dey, announced his personal contribution of Rs 50,000 to Dey’s grieving family. The 31-year-old Dey tragically lost his life while trying to rescue another individual during the recent floods.

“When faced with disasters, whether a pandemic or a natural calamity, the impact is universal. We must rise above differences in religion and community to stand united. I choose to spread love and empathy, even if others harbor hatred and jealousy. Now is not the time for politics, especially when people are suffering. The focus should be on helping those affected by the floods.” Said debbarma
Addressing the issue of idol vandalism, Debbarma stressed the role of political actors in such incidents, calling for an end to communal tensions.
“Politicians often have a hand in stoking communal violence, whether it’s in Gandatwisa or Ranirbazar. Such incidents only hinder Tripura’s development. We are all Indians, regardless of our religion, and it is unacceptable to see people fighting in the name of God. The culprit behind the desecration of the Kali Maa idol should be brought to justice, but targeting a Muslim family in retaliation is equally wrong. The law must take its course,” he asserted.
Debbarma emphasized India’s unique identity, contrasting it with neighboring countries. “In Pakistan and Bangladesh, minorities have been oppressed and failed to progress. India stands apart as the land of Swami Vivekananda and B R Ambedkar. We must ensure that minorities are empowered and modernized, not persecuted. This is not the time for communal violence,” he concluded.
