Security beefed up in Manipur on eve of Vice-President’s visit

IMPHAL, May 2 (NNN):
 Security has been beefed up in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, particularly in and around DM University campus and Manipur University in view of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s visit to Manipur.
The Vice President is scheduled to arrive here on Wednesday on a day-long visit during which he will attend events at DM University campus and Manipur University.
Ahead of the Vice President’s visit, Manipur police have taken up security measures in Imphal by conducting search and cordon operations at various places in the vicinity of the DM University today.
Teams of Imphal West district police commandos conducted search operations at some localities in Thangmeiband area early today morning.
During the operations commenced at 5 am at Maibam Leikai, Kabrabam Leikai and Hijam Leikai, the police commandos conducted searches to around 100 selected houses, mostly rented houses.
The police commandos also verified around 200 people including seven bailed out cadres of different underground outfits. There were no reports of rounding up any suspect during the operations, a police source said.
Another team of police commandos conducted a search operation at Khwairamband Keithel, Masjid Road, Wahengbam Leikai parking, Jiri parking and Uripok Machin. Of around 180 individuals verified, the police commandos picked up 20 individuals and handed them over to the city police station for further verification.
Search operations were also conducted at Kha Naorem Leikai covering Manipur University First Gate today morning during which around 100 houses including rented houses were searched and verified.
Similar operations were also conducted at Paona Bazar side at Governor Road. The police commandos conducted house to house searches during the operation. There were reports of picking up any suspect in the operations.
The police source said that the search operations were conducted in view of the visit of the VIP in Imphal on Wednesday.
The Vice President is scheduled to arrive here on Wednesday on a day-long visit during which he will attend events at two universities, officials said.
Dhankhar will take part in an interaction programme with faculties and scientists of the Central institutions like Manipur University, RIMS, Central Agricultural University, NIT, IIIT, National Sports University, Institute of Bio-Resources and Sustainable Development, ICAR, CSIR, etc. at Dhanamanjuri University.
The Vice-President will also interact with master craftspersons and national awardees of handloom and handicraft and GI tagged products of Manipur.
