GANGTOK, Mar 15: The government of Sikkim has made it compulsory for every tourist visiting the state to pay an entry charge of Rs 50. The new policy was enforced this month under the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules, 2025, as a big step by the state to increase its tourism sector.

It is collected by the authorities as an entry fee while carrying out the process of check-in at hotels. It is contributed to the Tourism Sustainability Development (TSD) Fund, which has been established for the upgradation of tourism-related infrastructure and services across the state. The proposal is to enable Sikkim to ensure a clean and sustainable tourism industry.

The fee is imposed on all the tourists barring those who are below five years of age. The fee is utilizable for 30 days of stay after which a tourist visiting the state again will be required to pay the fee again. The initiative will likely bring tremendous revenues that will be employed towards enhancing road connectivity, maintaining cleanliness in the region, and enhancing other tourist facilities.

It was revealed by authorities that the earned money from the admission fee would be used explicitly to develop and maintain important tourist facilities. Considering sustainability, the state aims to cater better to the visitors and, at the same time, save its natural tourist spots as well as the heritage.

Since Sikkim happens to be a favorite spot among nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts, the government believes that the step will help accelerate long-term tourism growth with the confidence that the state’s resources are conserved for the coming generations.
