IMPHAL, Feb 10 (NNN): A woman was arrested on Friday with 5.115kg of brown sugar by security forces in Manipur.
Police identified the woman as Vahhoihlhing Baite (41) of Churachandpur district. She was arrested after a brief chase as she attempted to avoid police checking on a car driven by herself, also said the police.
She was arrested by a combined team of Churachandpur district police and VDF personnel including women personnel from Rengkai around 9.30 am on February 10.
A police source said that the police team was on surveillance along the Sugnu-Churachandpur road, acting on reliable information regarding transportation of contraband drugs on the route.
On seeing a KIA Seltos car moving in a very suspicious manner, the team signaled to stop at Rengkai road but the vehicle sped away.
The vehicle was chased and finally intercepted at the Bijang Vengpi area.
Upon checking the vehicle after it was overpowered, the police detected four bags suspected to contain brown sugar in the vehicle in the presence of the district magistrate.
The four bags were opened in the presence of the district magistrate and civil witnesses from the locality and it was found to contain 440 soap cases of suspected brown sugar.
The suspected brown sugar was found to weigh 5.115 kg without the weight of the soap cases, the police said.
Following the detection of contraband drugs, the police formally arrested the woman and registered a case under section 21(c)/60 ND & PS Act for further investigation, the police added.
