Guwahati, Sept 30: The vibrant atmosphere in Guwahati, charged with the anticipation of the warm-up match between India and England, was marred by continuous rainfall, leading to the unfortunate cancellation of the match at Barsapara Stadium on Saturday.
The disappointment struck just after India won the toss and opted to bat against England. The heavy and unrelenting rainfall caused a delay in the proceedings, eventually forcing the match officials to call off the game.
The warm-up match, slated to begin at 2 pm, faced a series of interruptions due to the relentless downpour. Cricket enthusiasts, who had gathered in anticipation, were left disheartened as the weather gods refused to cooperate.
Earlier in the day, the atmosphere was filled with excitement as fans cheered for the Indian team upon their arrival at Barsapara Cricket Stadium. However, the rain played spoilsport, denying the fans the opportunity to witness their favorite players in action.
Guwahati was initially chosen to host four warm-up matches in the lead-up to the World Cup. Despite missing out on hosting a World Cup 2023 match, as decided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the ICC’s schedule announced in June, Barsapara Stadium was slated to host these warm-up encounters from September 29 to October 3.
