World tennis is in a new era. It has been for a few years now. Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer have been retired for years now. The only name from their era that still stands proud is Novak Djokovic. The veteran and one of the arguably best tennis players of all time still thrives in an era dominated by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. We all know that the only reason Novak is still playing is to give himself a chance to win another Grand Slam. With the two mentioned youngsters the task at hand is slowly becoming impossible. Yet, Djokovic persists.
With the start of the new season looking ahead, most news outlets are trying to figure out who could be the player to stop the domination of Alcaraz and Sinner in 2026. Yes, Djokovic is 38 years old, but it is him who is the closest in quality to the Italian and the Spaniard. With 24 Grand Slams to his name and numerous other trophies he is statistically the best player ever, as far as tournaments won go. The new duo of Sinner and Alcaraz is threatened by his mere presence. If you take a look at play10cric.com and their odds for the Australian Open, you can see that Djokovic is the third favorite to take home that GS behind Sinner and Alcaraz.
While it is becoming evident that age is catching up to Nole, thanks to his incredible fitness, diet, and training regimen, and of course the luxury of handpicking the tournaments he plays, he remains competitive despite his advancing age and the competition of the younger top players.
What makes Novak terrifying is the fact that he still rakes in points from tournament to tournament, and with the little number of appearances throughout the season , he still played some incredible tennis, and even managed to finish the year as the world’s No4 player. Due to this remarkable achievement, many tennis analysts still see him as the only man on the ATP tour who can stand against Sinner and Alcaraz. Greg Rusedski said about Novak, that despite him not playing a full season he still ranked No. 4 and is without a doubt the third best player on the tour, and that speaks a lot about the two.
The Serbian best athlete of all time has plenty to look forward to in 2026. After all, this year, he has proved that he is more than able to stand against younger players on the tour no matter who is on the other side of the net. With the incoming Australian Open the goals remain the highest for the Serb. He won the AO record ten times, and is looking for the 11th win and his 25th Grand Slam. Last year he was better than Carlos Alcaraz in Melbourne, and there’s no reason not to believe he can do the same again if given a chance.
Yet, it is going to be a challenging first major tournament of the year for Novak. At the end of the day, considering their ATO rankings, it is clear that if Nole wants another Australian Open in his trophy cabinet he will have to defeat either Sinner or Alcaraz in the semi final, and then, most likely the remaining one in the final of the tournament. Defeating both Alcaraz and Sinner in back to back matches in the best of three set matches, is not a feat that many tennis players have done, if any, since these two took the main stage.
What works in Novak Djokovic’s favour is his experience. It, paired with his incredible mental strength and the one of a kind ability to elevate his game when it matters the most, is what set him apart throughout his career and continues to do so. Yes, his game is a tad bit weaker than before, while the competition got better and younger, but Nole is not an ace we want to doubt.
While there is no doubt that Novak’s best years are behind him, he still breeds more confidence than the likes of Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Jack Draper, and Félix Auger Aliassime among many others on the ATP tour. None of these players has even 30% of Novak’s consistency. Alexander Zverev could be the one to put a dent into Alcaraz/Sinner domination but he still carries the heavy burden of being defeated in all three Grand Slam finals he appeared in.
Alex De Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti could also be in the mix for the biggest tennis accomplishments in the future, but the way things stand today, the only obstacle between another Alcaraz vs. Sinner Grand Slam final is Novak Djokovic. With only a few weeks to go until the start of the new tennis season, which will be crowned early on in Melbourne, all eyes will be set on Novak, Carlos, and Jannik. Do you think Djokovic can stop these two early in 2026?
