West Siang, May 21: A violent thunderstorm swept through West Siang and Upper Siang districts today, causing significant destruction and widespread disruption. The severe weather event led to extensive power outages, damaged numerous homes and vehicles, and created chaos across the affected areas.
The storm inflicted severe damage on low-tension (LT) poles and streetlights, plunging many regions into darkness. Critical infrastructure, including the post office, the Divisional Forest Office (DFO), and New Market, sustained substantial damage. Rural feeder lines were particularly hard hit, complicating efforts to restore electricity to the districts.
Falling trees during the storm caused significant damage to several cars, while the heavy rainfall and strong winds tore off the roofs of numerous houses, leaving residents vulnerable to the elements.
In response to the storm, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate rain for the Northeast states over the next six days. A heavy rain alert has been issued for various locations in Assam and Meghalaya until May 28. Additionally, Arunachal Pradesh, including the affected Siang districts, is expected to experience rainfall from May 22 to May 27.
Efforts to restore normalcy are underway, but the extent of the damage will require considerable time and resources to address. Residents are urged to stay safe and take necessary precautions as recovery operations continue.
