Guwahati, July 4: The 25th Convocation of IIT Guwahati witnessed chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria delivering inspirational speeches, urging the graduates to utilise their expertise in the field of innovation and create products that serve sustainable development. They also highlighted the importance of academic excellence and urged the graduates to be the masters of their own destiny by creating their own enterprises, thus opening up job opportunities for many in different domains.
Speaking at the convocation held at the institute premises, chief minister Sarma appealed to the graduates to use the knowledge they have gained during their time at IIT Guwahati for the greater good of humanity. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement about the third decade of the current century being pivotal for India’s development journey, CM Sarma called upon the IITs to take the lead in expediting the country’s progress. He expressed his satisfaction with the universities, colleges, IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS, which he described as the building blocks of a new India.
CM Sarma further highlighted the significance of emerging areas, such as advanced communication, wireless networking, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data science, and data analytics, in the next 25 years. He said that these fields would play a crucial role in effective business and economic deployment, aligning with the vision set for the next quarter-century. The chief minister expressed hope that the graduating students would continue their zeal for learning to contribute fully to the technological transformation needed to realise this vision.
Congratulating the graduates, CM Sarma requested them to contribute to the empowerment of the poor and downtrodden as they embark on their professional journeys. He also called upon the degree holders to lend their talents for the growth and development of Assam. In a symbolic gesture of commitment to environmental sustainability, the chief minister joined a sapling plantation drive on the institute’s campus.
Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, in his address, praised IIT Guwahati for its state-of-the-art facilities and its efforts to promote industry-academia collaboration, startups, and technology transfer. He acknowledged the institute’s role in championing high-quality technical education with a focus on research and development. Governor Kataria commended the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 and highlighted the introduction of online degree programs and the multiple entry and exit policy for students, which would increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio and provide opportunities for continued education.
The convocation ceremony was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, chairman of the Board of Governors Dr Rajiv Modi, director of IIT Guwahati PK Iyer, Education minister Ranoj Pegu, and various other dignitaries.
During the convocation, 2011 students were conferred degrees, including 816 BTech and BDes students, 157 MSc students, 43 MA students, 659 MTech students, 33 MS (R) students, and 303 PhD and dual masters and PhD students.
