GUWAHATI, July 12: In an ambitious initiative to preserve the ecological balance surrounding Guwahati, the state government led by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken decisive steps to safeguard Deepor Beel. Recognised as Assam’s only Ramsar site, Deepor Beel holds immense significance in maintaining the region’s environmental integrity. On Wednesday, state water resources minister Pijush Hazarika visited Khanamukh to inspect the implementation of arrangements facilitating water entry into the lake through a sluice gate. The primary objective of this initiative is to raise the water level of Deepor Beel to 1.5 meters. However, the conservation measures also emphasize the importance of preserving the lake’s heritage, beauty, and distinctiveness.

Chief minister Sarma expressed his commitment to the restoration and preservation of Deepor Beel, stating, “Deepor Beel is Assam’s only Ramsar site, and its holistic rejuvenation is one of our top priorities. Apart from ensuring perennial water flow, we are also building elevated rail and road corridors to protect wildlife and promote water sports.”

The Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, has acknowledged Deepor Beel’s ecological significance. By raising the water level, the Assam government aims to create a conducive environment for a diverse range of flora and fauna, thereby preserving the region’s biodiversity and maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

Furthermore, the conservation efforts extend beyond ensuring water flow into the lake. Plans are underway to construct elevated rail and road corridors, which will serve a dual purpose: Safeguarding wildlife and promoting water sports. These infrastructural developments will minimise disturbances to the natural habitat of the area’s wildlife, ensuring their continued protection. Simultaneously, the provision of facilities for water sports enthusiasts will facilitate responsible and sustainable recreational activities in the region.

With a comprehensive approach encompassing ecological balance, heritage preservation, and wildlife protection, Assam aims to secure the future of this remarkable natural treasure for generations to come.
