As many as 15 sex workers arrested in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, July 18 (NNN): As many as 15 sex workers were arrested in Meghalaya under the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act today.

Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills, Sylvester Nongtnger today said that foot patrolling has been intensified in the areas around Khyndailad to take action on sex workers whose acts of soliciting customers are not only illegal but often the cause for many law and order problems.

In this connection, a case under Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act has also been registered against them where 15 sex workers were apprehended and legal action taken, he said.

The SP informed that police have also started conducting vice raids and vigorous patrolling in the areas within Shillong city for the safety of the public and also to prevent untoward incidents.

Over 1,12,097 ml of IMFL and 7,74,000 ml of illicit liquor were seized during weekend during the vice raids conducted in the following locations with the help of the Meghashakti (women police commandos) at Motphran, Paltan Bazar, Mawblei, Nongrim Hills, Laitumkhrah Bazar, Mawlonghat, Urkaliar, Upper Shillong, Polo, Mawbah, Jhalupara and Upper Mawprem, the police officer also said.

Meanwhile, over 277 vehicles have also been compounded and Rs 2,36,500 has been realized as fine from violators during the day and night vehicle checking by the Shillong Traffic Police at various locations for offences of drunken driving, riding without a helmet, modified silencers, tinted glasses and other MV Act offences.
