Assam: Excise raid at Margherita

MARGHERITA, March 30: Acting on a tip-off, an extensive excise search, patrolling and raid was conducted on Tuesday night in Makum Bagan Tiniali and Station Para areas under Margherita police station of Tinsukia district.

The exercise was jointly conducted by the Excise staff of Margherita and Digboi Excise Circles under the direct supervision of Prasanta Dutta, deputy superintendent of Excise, Margherita. Dipak Kumar Sah (Case No.MRG/Ex/2022/56) age about 34 years resident of Makum Bagan Tiniali, Margherita and Sashi Kanta Pandey (Case No.MRG/Ex/2022/57) age about 45 years resident of Station Para, Margherita were arrested under Section 53 (1) (a) of the Assam Excise Act, 2000 (Amended) and produced before the sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate.

As per the recorded statement, the accused bought liquor from Arunachal Pradesh and re-bottled the same liquor in bottles marked for “sale in Assam only”. The empty bottles were bought from the local market.

About 27.24 litres of IMFL (for sale in Arunachal Pradesh Liquor (suspected), beer-3.25 BL, empty bottles- 49 nos., and bottle caps-57 nos. were seized and destroyed in the operation by the Excise team as per the report.

Both Dipak Kumar Sah and Sashi Kanta Pandey were sent to judicial custody till filing of this report.
