FDA needs strengthening, district-level monitoring vital: Guv Kataria

GUWAHATI, Sept 28: Governor Gulab Chand Kataria convened a meeting to discuss the activities of the Health and Family Welfare department and the Medical Education and Research department. The meeting was attended by Health and Family Welfare minister Keshab Mahanta and held in the conference hall of Raj Bhavan.

During the meeting, minister Keshab Mahanta provided a brief overview of the department’s diverse activities and ongoing infrastructural developments aimed at benefiting the people of the state. He also highlighted various clinical initiatives focused on enhancing public health and hygiene.

Additional chief secretary of the Health & Family Welfare department, Avinash Joshi, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the department’s activities and its commitment to delivering preventive, palliative, curative, and quality healthcare services to the state’s residents. The presentation covered topics such as the organisational structure, status of public health infrastructure, key health indicators, services provided, the universal immunisation program, schemes related to maternal health, achievements related to central and state government schemes, national missions, programs implemented by AYUSH, and best practices.

Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed satisfaction with the department’s performance. He urged that as both the central and state governments prioritise the health and hygiene of the people, the Health and Family Welfare department should go the extra mile to fulfil its mandate. With several medical colleges under construction or recently established, the department’s responsibilities will increase significantly.

The Governor advised the department to establish blood banks with blood storage facilities in every district and maintain the highest quality standards in district hospitals. He also stressed the importance of cleanliness in district hospitals and the provision of adequate parking facilities. Furthermore, he recommended that nurses receive the best training to enhance neonatal services.

Governor Kataria accentuated the need to strengthen the Commissionerate of Food and Drugs Administration and to establish regular monitoring mechanisms at the district level to improve performance.

The meeting also included a presentation on medical education and research in the state by commissioner and secretary of Medical Education and Research, Dr Siddharth Singh.

Several high-ranking officials attended the meeting, including commissioner and secretary to the Governor SS Meenakshi Sundaram, commissioner of Food and Drugs Administration Abhijit Baruah, secretary to Health and FW department. Barnali Sharma, mission director of the National Health Mission Dr MS Lakshmi Priya, project director of Assam State AIDS Control Society MN Dahal, VC of SSUHS Dr Dhrubajyoti Borah, secretary to the ME & RD Prakash Ranjan Gharphalia, director of Medical Education and Research Dr Anup Kr Barman, director of Health Services (Family Welfare) Kamaljit Talukdar, director of AYUSH Dr Indranoshee Das, director of Health Services Dr Nilmadhab Das, and other senior officers.
