TEZPUR, Dec 26: In a testament to its enduring legacy, Baan Theatre Tezpur, the pioneering Assamese modern Theatre Hall established in 1906, convened its biennial conference, marking 118 years of cultural significance. The day-long event witnessed the formation of a new executive committee, revitalising the commitment to the arts in Assam.
Commencing the proceedings, Bankim Sarma, a distinguished lyricist and the president of Baan Theatre, hoisted the flag and addressed the gathering. Emphasising the importance of preserving the legacy of Baan Theatre, Sarma urged attendees to contribute to the development of the organization, a stalwart in Assam’s cultural landscape.
The general meeting, presided over by Bankim Sarma, unfolded with Jitumani Deva Choudhury, the general secretary of Baan Theatre, presenting the proceedings of the previous three years’ executive meetings and outlining the objectives of the conference. Dwijen Nath, the secretary, provided a brief account of the general meetings, while Khanindra Kumar Deka elucidated the audited accounts of the organisation.
After thorough deliberation, the meeting took significant strides, resolving to establish a digital archive for the preservation of played drama scripts and organisational documents. Additionally, the decision was made to extend associate membership to a group of young members actively conducting children’s play workshops at Baan Theatre.
As part of the proceedings, Baan Theatre felicitated noted actor Bhabani Nath, social worker Nirmal Kalita, and theatre figure Pramath Das with lifetime membership certificates.
In the election that followed, the new executive committee was formed with Bankim Sarma as president, Dilip Bora and Bhabananda Das as vice presidents, Jitumani Deva Choudhury as general secretary, Dwijen Nath and Hemanta Kumar Sarma as secretaries, Bhupen Sarma as general manager, Jintu Borthakur as sangitadhikar, Bhupen Barua as librarian, and Taj Hussain as stage manager. Eighteen male and female executive members were also elected to serve for the forthcoming period, rejuvenating the commitment to cultural enrichment in the region.
