IMPHAL, Dec 28: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) recently questioned the significance of celebrating “Good Governance Day” by the ruling BJP “when its government in Manipur has failed on all fronts, particularly its failure to resolve the nearly eight month ethnic violence”.
“Good Governance Day” has been observed on December 25 each year since 2014 to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The celebration of the day hosted by the ruling BJP in Manipur held at the City Convention Centre, Imphal, was attended by chief minister N Biren Singh, state BJP president A Sarda Devi, BJP ministers, MLAs and others.
Addressing media today at Congress Bhavan here in connection with the preparation being made by the MPCC for Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ which is set to flag off from Manipur on January 14, MPCC president K Meghachandra asked whether the BJP can give ‘good governance’ to the people of the state.
“What is the significance of the Manipur BJP celebrating the day when nothing to bring back normalcy is seen taken up even after eight months of protracted crisis?” the Congress leader asked.
“For the last nearly eight months, the people of Manipur are living in fear of bullets every day amid the complete breakdown of law and order, people were deprived of internet access for over 7 months, and nothing to restore peace and normalcy is taken up. What is the significance of celebrating Good Governance Day?” he further asked.
Meghachandra then said that celebrating the day by the BJP in Manipur was an insult to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee “when there is complete breakdown of law and order for nearly eight months”.
The MPCC president also said that not only the Congress party but almost all sections of the society have been asking when will the normalcy be restored in the state with no answer till date.
He alleged that nothing to end the “protracted crisis” is seen taken up by the state government as well as the central government till date.
Meanwhile, Meghachandra said that MPCC is gearing up its preparation for Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ which is set to flag off from Manipur on January 14, while seeking support of all sections of the society in Manipur for the success of the yatra.
He informed that AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge will flag off the ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ from Imphal and conclude in Mumbai on March 20.
Asserting that this is the second edition of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, he said that Rahul Gandhi will walk across 85 districts of 14 states. Among others, the yatra will cover Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra, he said.
The main objective of the yatra is to secure economic, social, and political justice for the people of the country, the MPCC president added. (NNN)
