Itangar, March 4: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has assured the public that their dams in Arunachal Pradesh are safe, despite concerns raised after a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in the Teesta Valley in October 2023.
The NHPC emphasizes that the conditions that caused the GLOF in the Teesta Valley are different from those around their dams in Arunachal Pradesh. They explain that the September 2023 flood, which originated from a lake far upstream, could have been triggered by factors like earthquakes, flash floods, or glacier movements, which are not relevant to the Arunachal Pradesh dams.
A massive flood occurred due to a glacial lake outburst upstream, releasing 8,000-10,000 cubic meters of water and large boulders. The affected lake’s surface area shrunk from 167 hectares to 130 hectares after the breach.
The Teesta III Dam, with a reservoir capacity of 5 million cubic meters, was impacted due to its proximity to the breached lake and the steep riverbed. The flood reached the dam within an hour, exceeding its capacity and causing a breach.
Despite the significant flooding at NHPC projects, two downstream concrete dams (Teesta V and TLDP IV) and a barrage (TLDP-III) remained intact, demonstrating their resilience.
