TEZPUR, March 22: The Department of Public Health Engineering, Sonitpur, in association with Darrang College, celebrated World Water Day at the college premises, focusing on the theme ‘Water for Peace’ and highlighting the critical role of water in the stability and prosperity of the world. Nearly one hundred students from seven schools and colleges participated in a district-level speech competition organised in connection with the event, with sub-themes including ‘Significance of World Water Day’, ‘Water for Peace’, and ‘Water Conservation’.
Alongside the competition, a talk on ‘The Importance of Water for the Survival of Mankind’ commenced with a welcome address by Dr Lakshmi Roy, academic vice principal (Science) at Darrang College. The event was graced by dignitaries including Nayanjyoti Hazarika, executive engineer (PHE) Tezpur, and Manash Bhuyan, district coordinator (PHE), along with faculty members Dr Arundhati Deka Nath, Abhijit Das, Dr Nabanita Medhi, Dr Gakul Kr Das, Dr Chittaranjan Baruah, Dr Kihor Deka, Gulap Sonowal, and Ritu Sharma.
As distinguished speakers, Nayanjyoti Hazarika and Manash Bhuyan from the PHE Department emphasised the importance of celebrating World Water Day. Dr Lakshmi Roy and Dr Arundhati Deka Nath judged the speech competition, which was held in two categories.
In category I of the speech competition, Barbi Borah and Bhaswati Kashyap of Tezpur Government Girls’ H.S. and MP School secured the first and second prizes, respectively, while Abhisekh Kr Rai of Rashtrabhasa Vidyalaya won the third prize.
Our Nagaon correspondent adds: The Public Health Engineering Department, Dhing division, and Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), Dhing College jointly observed ‘World Water Day’ on Friday at Dhing College here. The event included a speech competition for both college and school-level students in two categories and also conducted an awareness program.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members representing various educational institutions of greater Dhing and Moirabari.
M Dewan, executive engineer, PHED, Pomi Bora, SDO, PHED, as well as other dignitaries from Dhing College Prof GC Bharali, Dr SK Nath, Dr MM Saikia, Dr LN Bordoloi delivered speeches highlighting the theme of this year’s celebration of the day – ‘Water for Peace’. Dr Biman Hazarika, principal of the college, narrated the history of the observance of World Water Day since 1993 and the importance of water in day-to-day life, a press note said here.
