JORHAT, June 4: Assam chief secretary Jishnu Baruah on Saturday said that learning English properly in Assamese medium schools was imperative as one may be required to go outside the state for job or career opportunities.
Baruah, who inspected the 113 No Gharphalia LP School at Chenijan in the district as an external evaluator of the third phase of the Gunotsav programme from June 1 to 4, spoke on a number of issues including the National Education Policy.

Baruah told reporters on the sidelines of the school visit that as everyone might not get a job in the state, learning English properly or nowadays Hindi, would be an advantage while searching for jobs outside the state.
He added that approximately only five children in the school knew a bit of English and one way in which they could become more conversant in the language was through extensive reading.
Baruah further informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be meeting the chief secretaries of all the states at Dharamshala on June 16 and 17 to discuss the National Education Policy and three other subjects.
“I will have to present what the education scenario is in Assam,” he added.
Regarding implementation of NEP in Assam he said that it would be implemented but no time frame had been fixed.
“We have left this to the Universities,” he added.
Baruah further said that the process of rationalisation of teachers in schools was ongoing and that more teachers in schools where there were fewer students would be posted in schools where there were more students.
A district administration source stated that Baruah after arriving at the school made a round of the school premises and interacted with students and teachers.
The chief secretary listened to the reading of lessons by students in classrooms and also gave tips on learning. Barua also later had an interaction with guardians of the students, the source added.
In the four-day programme several VIPs that included government officials, MLAs visited different schools as external evaluators. Altogether 1,380 schools (Government and Provincialised) with 74,529 students from different classes were covered during the event.
