HOJAI, April 8: Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said on Monday that inner urge, determination, perseverance, commitment, and consistency are more important for a student to excel in life than comfort and amenities. The Governor and chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University made this statement while speaking at the 1st convocation ceremony of Rabindranath Tagore University in Hojai on Monday. He emphasised that education is not only about books but also about enlightening us in all spheres of life. Education, he said, is a lifelong continuous process, where one can learn anything at any time. The Governor highlighted that education opens doors to ample opportunities. “Students should be job creators who can contribute to the upliftment of the nation,” he added. The Governor expressed his delight at being part of the first convocation ceremony of RTU, stating that it is a historic day for Rabindranath Tagore University. The Governor described convocation as the biggest festival for students, as they are conferred with the degrees for which they have toiled hard for years. He emphasised the vital contribution of parents and teachers, stating that it needs to be remembered and cherished always. The Governor further remarked that the name of the university, honouring the legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore, makes it a more special and revered place. “Now, it is the responsibility of the students to maintain the honour and respect of Rabindranath Tagore University,” he said.
The Governor further lauded the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said under PM Modi’s visionary leadership, India is prospering rapidly in all sectors. He also praised chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his optimistic and bold decisions for the all-round development of Assam, especially in the education sector. Dr Virendra M Tiwari, director of CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Jorhat, graced the occasion as the chief guest. While speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the fundamental principles of Tagore’s educational philosophy. He expressed a strong conviction that Rabindranath Tagore University, Hojai, will be the torchbearer of the fecund legacy, spirit, and motto of modern education envisioned by Rabindranath Tagore and will blend well to complement the New Education Policy.
Speaking on the special occasion, vice chancellor Prof Amalendu Chakrabarty said it is a great pleasure and honour for all of us. Rabindranath Tagore University is a prime example in front of us as a budding educational institution for higher education, which has developed rapidly with consistent success and performance by our teachers and student fraternity. He said the location of the university serves an important purpose of socio-cultural solidarity among us. He noted that Assam is a mini-India filled with a mixed population from diverse cultures, and so is Hojai, a mini Assam, which brings together people from various cultures and innumerable social spaces. It is noteworthy that a total of 1124 students were conferred degrees in the first convocation ceremony of RTU, out of which 950 students completed graduation and 184 students completed post-graduation. Notably, 569 students registered their names to attend the convocation, out of which 118 students completed post-graduation from the Arts stream and 56 students completed post-graduation from the Science stream. Additionally, 472 students of Arts, 272 students of Science, and 206 students of Commerce completed graduation. On the other hand, two students who excelled in post-graduation (2023) at the university were awarded gold medals and degrees.
Nashima Yesmin of the Chemistry department was awarded the Radhika Ranjan Chakraborty Memorial Gold Medal, and Puja Chanda of the Bengali department was awarded the Basanti Chakraborty Memorial Gold Medal. Simultaneously, a student with disability, Neha Das, who had completed her graduation from the department of English in 2019, was also conferred with a degree. At the outset, the ceremony began with the singing of the national anthem and the university Song. Following that, Tilak Chandra Kalita, Registrar (I/c) of RTU, delivered the welcome speech. The convocation ceremony concluded with the singing of the national anthem and the state song of Assam, ‘O Mur Apunar Dekh’. It is worth mentioning here that on July 11, 1964, Hojai College was established in Hojai, which has been a beacon of education for more than half a century. Then, on October 16, 2017, Hojai College was upgraded to Rabindranath Tagore University, and the first vice chancellor, Prof Amalendu Chakrabarty, joined the institution in the year 2019.
