JORHAT, May 26: The Jorhat district administration has rescheduled the school timings and has directed all schools (lower primary, middle English/upper primary, high, and higher secondary) to function from 7:30 am starting Monday (May 27) in view of the continuous rise in mercury and scorching heat.
In an order passed by the inspector of schools (Jorhat) Buli Gogoi Bhuyan on Saturday, it was stated that as per the instructions of the district commissioner and the direction of the state government in the interest of students’ safety and public well-being, the timings of schools – government, provincialised, and private – have been rescheduled from Monday and will be functioning from 7:30 am.

As per the order, LP school timings are from 7:30 am to 12 noon, ME/upper primary is from 7:30 am till 12:30 pm, and high and higher secondary from 7:30 am till 1:00 pm. The order mentions that it comes into effect from May 27 and will remain in force until further notice.
The order also directs the heads of the schools to conduct the morning assembly inside the classroom or in a shaded area. Furthermore, it mentions that adequate drinking water should be provided to every student, and students should be encouraged to carry water bottles and drink at intervals of every half an hour.
Electric fans should be kept in running condition, and in case of defective fans, immediate measures should be taken to repair or replace them, the order states. Outdoor activities should be restricted during this heatwave, and students may be instructed not to wear blazers, waistcoats, and ties. If students feel uncomfortable wearing shoes, they should be allowed to wear sandals, the order mentions.
The order further asks the heads of the schools to ensure that vendors selling ice creams, puchkas, etc., are not allowed to carry out their business near school premises.
Our Hojai correspondent adds: Due to the escalating temperatures, the Hojai district administration has decided to adjust school timings starting May 27. Bony Inam Shadab, ADC and district coordinator of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, with the approval of district commissioner Lachit Kumar Das, has issued a directive to all educational institutions in the district.
Effective from May 27, primary school classes will be conducted from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, secondary school classes from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, and higher secondary classes from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. This schedule will be in effect until further notice.
