Schools adjust timings amid rising temperatures across Assam

KOKRAJHAR, May 25: In view of the scorching heat wave across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) districts, the government of Bodoland Territorial Region has decided to reschedule the school timings of all government, provincialised, and private elementary, secondary & higher secondary schools in BTR w.e.f. May 27, 2024.

The decision has been taken to spare the children from the extreme afternoon heat and to ensure that students can continue to learn in a conducive environment across the region. In a notification issued on Saturday, the Department of Education, government of BTR, has announced the rescheduling of school timings in the interest of public wellbeing.

The normal school timing of government, provincialised, and private elementary, secondary, and higher secondary schools under Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) has been rescheduled with effect from May 27, 2024. LP Schools will operate from 7:30 am to 11 am, UP schools from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, and HS/HS schools from 7:30 am to 12 noon.

The chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region and in-charge of the Education Department, Pramod Boro, stated that the normal school timing has been rescheduled across the BTR districts due to the scorching heatwave in the afternoon.

“In view of the scorching heat wave across BTR, it has been decided to reschedule the school timings of all government, provincialised, and private elementary, secondary & higher secondary schools in BTR w.e.f. May 27, 2024. This decision has been taken to spare the children from the extreme afternoon heat and to ensure that students can continue to learn in a conducive environment,” Boro added.

Our Tezpur correspondent adds: Due to the prevailing extreme heatwave and to ensure the safety and well-being of students, the school timings of all government, provincialised, and private schools under Sonitpur district have been advanced and rescheduled. Lower primary schools will operate from 7:30 am to 12:00 noon, middle english/upper primary schools from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm, and high schools from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm.

The order, signed by Mridul Kumar Nath, AES-I, inspector of schools of the Sonitpur district circle, and DEEO, Sonitpur, has been issued in pursuance of WT Message no E.308138/1, from the secretary to the government of Assam, Department of School Education. This order will come into force from May 27, 2024, until further notice.

Our Bureau adds: According to a message received from the principal secretary of the NC Hills Autonomous Council, Dima Hasao, Haflong, and considering the well-being of the students amidst the increasing temperature and scorching heat, the timing for the following categories of educational institutions (government provincialised and private) has been adjusted as follows – primary level classes will now commence from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, middle school classes from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, and higher secondary classes from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm, effective from May 24.

Similarly, in response to the soaring temperature and ongoing heatwave, the district commissioner of Cachar, Rohan Kumar Jha, has also announced revised school timings to protect students’ health and safety. Issuing an order on Saturday, the district commissioner stated that starting on Monday, May 27, all government and private schools will operate on adjusted schedules. The order further states that all LP schools will operate from 7:30 am to 12:15 pm, while UP schools will operate from 7:30 am to 12:45 pm. High schools and higher secondary schools within the Cachar district will also operate from 7:30 am to 1:15 pm.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Cachar district has persistently faced high temperatures during the last week, with a continuous rise in mercury levels. Keeping in view of the situation, district commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha also asked school authorities to take appropriate measures to ensure the well-being of the students and to minimise their exposure to extreme heat during school hours.
