Kolkata, May 27: In a recent announcement, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has detailed the trajectory and anticipated weakening of Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal’ after its landfall in coastal West Bengal and Bangladesh. The storm is expected to shift from a northward path to a north-northeast direction while gradually diminishing into a Cyclonic Storm.
According to the IMD, Cyclone ‘Remal’ progressed northwards, crossing the Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Islands and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla. The IMD’s post on X highlighted the cyclone’s specifics: “The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal’ over the North Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards at a speed of 13 kmph over the past six hours, making landfall between Sagar Islands and Khepupara near Latitude 21.75°N and Longitude 89.2°E from 22:30 IST on May 26 to 00:30 IST on May 27, 2024, with wind speeds of 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph.”
The IMD further reported, “As of 01:30 IST on May 27, 2024, the storm was centered over Coastal Bangladesh and adjoining Coastal West Bengal, at latitude 21.9°N and longitude 89.2°E, approximately 115 km east of Sagar Islands (West Bengal), 105 km west-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 70 km southeast of Canning (West Bengal), and 50 km south-southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh). The system is anticipated to continue moving northwards for a brief period before turning north-northeastwards and weakening into a Cyclonic Storm by the morning of May 27.”
In response to the cyclone’s impact, Kolkata Municipality and Kolkata Police Disaster Management teams are actively working to clear uprooted trees throughout the city. Early morning visuals depict heavy rains and strong winds battering the South 24 Parganas district and Kolkata, as residents brace for the storm’s effects.
