Laharighat unites to combat tobacco menace

MORIGAON, June 7: To create intensive awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use, particularly among youth and rural communities, an awareness meeting was organised by the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, government of Assam. The event was supported by the Laharighat Child Development Project Office, Morigaon, and initiated by Nasha Mukta Bharat Abhiyaan. It was held at the auditorium hall of the Laharighat Block Development Office on Friday.

The child development project officer, Jitu Deka, delivered the inaugural speech at the program. Speaking on the occasion, the CDPO asked the attending AWWs, AWHs, and students to cooperate with the district tobacco control cell, led by Dr Jayaprava Bodo, who has been conducting intensive awareness campaigns. He expressed hope that these efforts could soon turn the greater Laharighat block into a tobacco-free zone.

Earlier, senior supervisors of the Laharighat CDPO office, Satya Deka, Manumai Kathar, Begum Faria Kamal, Namita Barman, Namita Saikia, and Bhagyashree Borkataki, felicitated the invited guests. A power-point presentation on tobacco consumption and its harmful effects was displayed by Dr Jayaprava Bodo, nodal officer, DTCC, Morigaon. Additionally, a street play on the effects of tobacco consumption was performed by the AWWs of the Laharighat ICDS project.

The meeting was attended by deputy superintendent of MGMH, Laharighat, Dr Utpal Thakuria, SA Rantu Thakuria, and the Poshan team.
