June 10, Monday: The recent outbreak of violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district has prompted a mass exodus of hundreds of individuals seeking refuge in neighbouring Assam, prompting authorities to tighten border security measures.
In response to the escalating unrest, Assam has ramped up security along its interstate border, particularly in the Lakhipur area of Cachar district. The influx of displaced persons from Manipur highlights the ongoing ethnic tensions that have plagued the region since May 3 of the previous year.
The latest wave of violence erupted on June 6 following the discovery of the body of Soibam Saratkumar Singh, a 59-year-old Meitei farmer who had been missing for weeks. His death sparked outrage among local residents, leading to protests and demands for self-defense measures. To quell the unrest, the Jiribam District Magistrate imposed a district-wide curfew.
The impact of the violence has spilled over into Assam, with approximately 600 individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds seeking refuge in Lakhipur, Cachar district. Assam Police has responded by deploying special commando units along the Assam-Manipur border and initiating regular patrols to maintain order and provide reassurance to the local population.
Numal Mahatta, Superintendent of Police in Cachar, emphasized the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community, stating that security measures have been bolstered to ensure peace and stability. However, he warned that any attempt to disrupt the peace would be met with legal action.
As the situation in Jiribam remains tense, authorities continue to enforce the curfew and work towards de-escalating the violence and restoring normalcy to the region.
