Sivasagar Girls’ College to launch year long diamond jubilee celebrations on July 8

SIVASAGAR, June 13: A premier women’s educational institution, Sivasagar Girls’ College (Est. 1964), will observe the year-long diamond jubilee from July 8, the foundation day of the college. Sivasagar Girls’ College has a glorious tradition and has contributed substantially to the academic, cultural, and literary fields in the state. Biren Borkotoky, former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, was one of its illustrious principals. The public meeting held for the purpose in the college auditorium was presided over by Dr Jogesh Bora, president of the college’s governing body. Dr Protim Sharma, the principal, delivered his welcome address and urged all the stakeholders and well-wishers to extend their generous help and cooperation in observing the jubilee successfully. While welcoming the decision of the college to observe the jubilee, most of the participants in the meeting expressed their commitment to extend all possible help to the committee. Dr Hemanta Phukan, former principal, addressed the meeting and said that the observance committee must keep an eye on the residual effect and the pressure on the students in these days of hectic work schedules. Prof Anu Sarma, an alumnus and also a retired principal of the college, said that the alumni association has been contributing and will continue to contribute to the development of the college.

Dr Jakir Hussain spoke on the objectives and spelled out the names of the persons included in the celebration committee. Punaram Mili, president of Sivasagar Sports Association, stressed permanent construction work during the year. Dr Rita Borkatoky said that as a former principal, she would be happy to cooperate with the committee for the development of the college. It was also addressed by the former principal of Sibsagar College, Dr Prakash Kotoky, the principal of Sibsagar College, Dr Prafulla Kalita, the former principal of Sibsagar Commerce College, Kartick Dutta, president of ATASU, Basanta Gogoi, assistant secretary of AASU, Samiran Phukan, cultural exponent, Makhan Bora, former president of Rangpur Sahitya Sabha, Dipali Bhattacharjya Baruah, retired subject teacher, Dipali Saikia, former president of Asom Kobi Sanmilan, Prema Gogoi, and working president of Assam State Journalists Union, Manoj Kumar Borthakur. Dr Prakash Kotoky in his speech stressed fiscal discipline, while Manoj Kumar Borthakur suggested adopting a programme that involves women who are still deprived of education in our society.

A Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee was formed in the meeting with Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister, as the chief patron, Aditya Vikram Yadav, DC Sivasagar, as the chief adviser, Dr Jogesh Bora as the president, Prof Bhaskar Dutta as working president, Dr Protim Sharma as the secretary, and Prof Bidyut Baruah as the treasurer.
