June 22, Saturday: Voice of Environment (VoE), in collaboration with the Kamakhya Temple Authority and the Railway Protection Force, conducted a mass sensitization and awareness campaign at Kamakhya Railway Junction. The initiative focused on promoting a clean and plastic-free environment at the Kamakhya Temple during the upcoming Ambubachi Mela 2024. The programme featured interactive sessions with shopkeepers, railway officials, and visitors, emphasizing the importance of sanitation and hygiene. Additionally, a signature campaign was organized to garner public support for environmental sustainability.
The event aimed to address the challenges posed by the large influx of devotees during the Ambubachi Mela, which significantly increases waste generation and environmental strain. By involving local stakeholders and the public, VoE and its partners hope to create lasting behavioral changes that will benefit the temple area and its surroundings.
Participants were educated on the harmful effects of single-use plastics and were encouraged to adopt more sustainable practices. The Railway Protection Force played a crucial role in facilitating the smooth execution of the campaign, ensuring that the message reached a wide audience. This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards achieving a cleaner and more sustainable environment for one of Assam’s most revered religious sites.
