DIPHU, April 1: Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) said there is partiality in the withdrawal of AFSPA from the northeastern states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, as the AFSPA is in place in nine districts of Assam including Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. The ASDC demanded that it should be immediately lifted from the three hill districts of Assam.
The ASDC president, Chandra Kanta Terang in a press conference here at his residence at Rongmili said, “The Central government on Thursday announced the reduction of disturbed areas under the contentious Arms Force Special Power Act (AFSPA) 1958 from the Northeastern states of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland. In Assam, AFSPA is in place in 9 districts including one sub-division of Cachar district. Among the nine districts are Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.” Terang said from 2019 to 2022, there were several agreements signed by the Central government with the armed organisations. Mention may be made of NALT/NLFT agreement in August 2019; the Bru Riang agreement on January 16 2022, the Bodo agreement on January 27, 2022, and Karbi Anglong agreement on September 4, 2022, and an agreement by chief ministers of Meghalaya and Assam on March 29 to resolve the disputed areas on the inter-state boundary line.
“The present BJP government says that it is a big achievement for them in establishing peace in the Northeast region. If it is a big achievement for the government then why is the AFSPA still imposed in the three hill districts of Assam,” Terang questioned the government.
Terang further said it is the government’s intention to destabilise the peaceful democratic movement of ASDC for Autonomous State or to create a law and order situation in the upcoming KAAC election. The motive behind the partiality on the part of the government should be made clear to the people. The ASDC demanded the government that AFSPA be repealed immediately along with the removal of the Act entirely.
