DIPHU, Nov 28: The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) remembered its first chief executive member (CEM) of erstwhile Karbi Anglong District Council now Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Khorsing Terang on his 68th death anniversary on Monday.
The observation started with the garlanding of the statue of Khorsing Terang at the old and new Khorsing Terang Memorial Park by CEM, Tuliram Ronghang, executive member (EMs) and member of Autonomous Council (MACs).
At new Khorsing Terang Memorial Park, where the main observation was held the chairman, KAAC, Raju Tisso; member of Parliament, Horensing Bey and MLAs Bidyasing Engleng and Dorsing Ronghang also offering floral tribute at the statue of late Terang.
The life and works of Khorsing Terang was discussed. He termed late Terang as one of the great leaders among the Karbis who has a love for his people and land. It is fortunate to have a leader like Terang among the Karbis and his exemplary lives should be followed by all.
Sharing his experience, Padmashree Rongbong Terang said it was due to the help and support he received from Khorsing Terang that he could be in this position.
The Padmashree recipient said, “It was in Class -6 studying in Lanka ME School in 1968 and I have to appear for an exam in Kampur. My father was very poor and I had no money to appear for the exam. I approached the then CEM, Khorsing Terang and told him about my requirement. He readily gave me Rs. 30 which was a sufficient amount at that time. It was the help given to me by Khorsing Terang that I could get recognition from people of what I am today. I owe him as much as he loves me,” Terang said.
Another Padmashree recipient Dhaneswar Engti sharing about the life of Khorsing Terang said, “When Gopinath Bordoloi was the then Prime Minister of the Legislative Council of the Assam Province during the British rule India during 1935 and Khorsing Terang was the member of Legislative Council (MLC), Bordoloi has asked Khorsing Terang to vote in his favour and he will be given minister in the Council. But late Terang replied to Gopinath saying, I don’t need a minister, what I want is a district.”
When late Terang was an MLC, he had a love for his own people.
MLA Dorsing Terang said the late Terang has a love for other tribes. I have heard that Terang went to meet MLC Hilsing Deuri requesting him to live together with the Tiwa and Karbi communities. But Hilsing Deuri replied to the late Terang saying, “How can we live with the Karbi wearing loin-cloth (lengti mara Karbis.)
MP Horensing Bey termed late Terang as a visionary leader.
Various religious leaders were given time to offer prayers for the soul of late Terang. Kacharhe – Karbi mourning song was sung by Bina Rongpipi; Geeta Path was read by Pavitra Kakoti, bible reading by Rev. Hilson Singnar, Pastor, Diphu Baptist Church; Guru Granth Sahib Path by Monphul Singh from Diphu Gurudwara; Quran path by Iman Uddin Borbhuyan; Kirtan Path by Thaneswar Bora from Diphu Bor Namghar; Lokhimon prayer by Inglongchingri Lokhimon Mandir and Karbi Bhaktitom Trust.
23 persons recited their self-composed poems on late Terang and other topics.
