DIPHU, July 7: The Jagannath Rath Yatra, a Hindu festival reenacting Lord Jagannath’s journey to Gundicha mandir, his maternal aunt’s home, was celebrated at the Jagannath (ISKCON) temple in Rongthe-ang on Sunday.
This annual festival commemorates Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladhadra, and Goddess Subhadra’s journey from Puri, Odisha to Gundicha temple. Known as the festival of chariots, it involves carrying the deities on three massive wooden chariots pulled by devotees.
Activities at Jagannath (ISKCON) temple, Rongthe-ang began early Sunday with mangal arati at 4:20 am. Devotees cleaned the temple grounds and prepared for morning prayers, including darshan arati where Lord Jagannath was adorned.
At noon, devotees gathered for the Gita path, led by Prabhu Babu Rongpi, followed by the distribution of Gita prasad among attendees.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra commenced at 4 pm from Jagannath temple, Rongthe-ang, with an image of Lord Jagannath placed inside the chariot. Thousands of devotees participated, pulling the chariot along its route from Rongthe-ang to Diphu market via Sibari Road, Sitlabari, Matipung road, Rongnihang, and back to Rongthe-ang.
Bimang Kro, an Executive Member of Jagannath Temple Committee, Rongthe-ang, reported a participation of over 3000 devotees, marking it as the largest gathering in Diphu for the event. The Yatra celebrations will continue until July 15.
