GUWAHATI, July 29: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), in its ongoing effort to enhance track safety and provide a safer and more comfortable travel experience to rail passengers, has made significant progress in track maintenance works. During the financial year 2024-25, NFR has achieved several milestones related to track safety, surpassing the targets set by the Railway Board.
In June 2024, the complete track renewal of 26.38 kilometres was completed, making a cumulative progress of 69.65 kilometres from April to June 2024. This represents a 59.77 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Thorough sleeper renewal of 23.69 track kilometres (TKM) was completed in June, with a cumulative progress of 71.75 TKM from April to June 2024, a 135.63 percent increase over the previous year. Thorough turnout renewals of 23 equivalent sets were completed in June, with a cumulative progress of 48.50 equivalent sets from April to June 2024, a 117.98 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Thick web switches (TWS) totaling 17 were installed in June 2024, bringing the cumulative total to 49 from April to June 2024, a 2350 percent increase over the same period last year. Additionally, deep screening of 28.34 TKM of plain track was completed in June, with a cumulative progress of 145.41 TKM from April to June 2024, a 156 percent increase from the previous year.
Moreover, 1132.20 kilometres of track were tested by the USFD (Ultrasonic Flaw Detection) machine in June 2024, making a cumulative total of 5221.60 kilometres from April to June 2024. The USFD technique is employed to detect flaws such as cracks and to facilitate the timely removal of defective rails for safety.
It is noteworthy that NFR regularly undertakes various track renewal works to maintain railway tracks in proper condition, ensuring a safe and secure train journey with enhanced passenger comfort. These activities include the replacement of worn tracks, turnouts, damaged sleepers, and deep screening with ballasting of tracks.
