MARGHERITA, Aug 19: In line with the ongoing golden Jubilee celebrations of the Tinsukia District Journalists Association, the Margherita Journalists Association organised a two-day ‘World Photography Day’ event at Margherita India Auditorium on Sunday and Monday.
On the first day, the festivities kicked off with a state-level art and drawing competition, inaugurated by Anand Kumar Sharma, chairman of the Margherita Municipal Board.
The competition drew an impressive turnout, with over 200 participants showcasing their talents and creativity. This event underscored the importance of nurturing young artistic talent and provided a platform for budding artists to express themselves.
Following the competition, an art and photography exhibition was held, which was inaugurated by Jagat Changmai, a veteran journalist and renowned artist of the Margherita subdivision.
The exhibition featured a diverse range of works, highlighting the rich artistic heritage of the area and offering a visual treat to attendees.
The highlight of the celebration was a photography workshop led by Assam’s renowned and esteemed photographer, Ashwini Borkatoky, who was present as the chief guest.
The workshop attracted more than 100 participants eager to learn from Borkatoky’s expertise and gain insights into the art of photography. His presence added significant value to the event, inspiring both amateurs and seasoned photographers alike.
The two-day event not only commemorated World Photography Day but also served as a testament to the ongoing commitment of the Margherita Journalists Association to foster cultural and artistic engagement in the region.
On Monday, the second day of the program began with an open session and prize distribution ceremony, which was presided over by Dr Rishi Das, president of the Tinsukia District Journalists Association, followed by the lighting of earthen lamps by the present guests.
Rana Jyoti Neog, general secretary of the Tinsukia District Journalists Association and Margherita Journalists Association, delivered the aims and objectives of the meeting, while Ram Prasad Ambedkar delivered the welcome speech.
After that, all the present journalists were felicitated with a Golobastro and a participation certificate from the organising committee.
On the eve of World Photography Day, a state-level photography competition was held, where Jiten Phukan won the first prize and received a cash amount of Rs 11,000, Mahananda Buragohain won the second prize with a cash amount of Rs 8,000, and Abhijit Bose won the third prize with a cash amount of Rs 6,000 along with other prizes.
Anjan Kumar Sharma, vice president of Assam Union of Working Journalists, Ashwini Borkatoky, renowned and esteemed photographer of Assam, Dr Kripa Prasad Upadhyay, principal of Ledo College, veteran journalist and former president of Tinsukia District Journalists Association Arjun Baruah, Tinsukia Press Club president Kamal Talukdar, Tinsukia District Journalists Association vice president Ratul Kalita, noted social worker of Margherita Jyotish Sundas, All Assam Bhojpuri Parishad Central Committee president Kailash Kumar Gupta, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad Tinsukia District Committee general secretary Kanchan Borah, noted social worker of Ledo Tarun Gogoi, among others, were present and delivered their valuable speeches on the eve of World Photography Day.
Renowned and esteemed photographer Ashwini Borkatoky, who was present as the keynote speaker, in his speech said that earlier photography was not given much importance, but nowadays one can earn a livelihood through photography.
“A photo or a picture speaks a thousand words that cannot be elaborated upon, while most photographers around the world have brought attention to society through their rare photographs. So, I request everyone who is interested in photography to consider taking this profession as a career,” said Ashwini Borkatoky.
Dr Dipali Borpujari’s book titled ‘Singpho Wisdom’ was inaugurated by the present guests.
After that, meritorious children of the Tinsukia District Journalists Association were felicitated with the Chiranjilal Goyal and Sarada Devi Goyal Memorial Award.
The program concluded with an extended executive meeting of the Tinsukia District Journalists Association.
