JORHAT, Sept 11: Former fighter pilot Mohonto Panging Pao, one of the first officers from the north-eastern region to serve as a group captain in the Indian Air Force, attended the 11th foundation day of Assam Women’s University here as chief guest.
Pao, in his speech, stressed the importance of individuals from northeastern India in all sectors of work for greater nation-building. He encouraged the students of Assam Women’s University to take pride in their roots and urged them to engage in entrepreneurship, particularly in key industries, to drive socioeconomic development in the region.
Sharing his personal experiences as a fighter pilot, Pao spoke about overcoming challenges and the lessons learned on his journey, inspiring the audience to work hard and remain committed to their aspirations.
The foundation day event commenced with the hoisting of the university flag by Professor Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar, vice chancellor of Assam Women’s University. The vice chancellor, in her address, discussed the university’s recent advancements and reflected on the contributions of those involved in its establishment and growth since 2014.
Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka, vice chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, lauded the role of the vice chancellor of Assam Women’s University in taking the university in a positive direction.
Dr Ashok Bhattacharyya, former director of Research, Assam Agricultural University, who also served briefly as the in-charge vice chancellor of Assam Women’s University, congratulated the students, faculty, and staff of the university on the completion of ten years of the institution.
Earlier, Tapan Kr Gohain, ACS and registrar of Assam Women’s University, delivered the welcome address. The programme was moderated by Parthiv Nandan Saikia, an assistant professor in the department of English at the university. All the students, research scholars, faculty members, and staff of the university were present at the event, marking the 11th foundation day of the region’s only women’s university. Apart from cultural performances by students, an annual poetry magazine titled ‘Sojourner’ was released on the occasion. ‘Sakhyor’, another publication from the department of Assamese, which documents the university’s journey over the last ten years, was also released.
In the morning, at 11:00 am, a street play on the theme ‘Awareness against Sexual Harassment of Women’ was conducted in front of the Jorhat District Commissioner’s Office by the Assam Women’s University Women’s Cell in connection with the university’s foundation day.
