GUWAHATI, Oct 2: Assam Police arrested at least 14 Bangladeshi people for attempting to enter Indian Territory in South Salmara and Karimganj district, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday adding that a total of 108 citizens of the neighbouring country were arrested since unrest broke out in Bangladesh.
Taking to X handle, Sarma wrote, “Based on intel input, 14 illegal Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended by Assam Police yesterday in South Salmara and Karimganj districts.”
According to him, 9 out of total 14 persons were found carrying Indian Aadhaar cards.
The apprehended individuals are identified as Md. Ariful Islam, Md. Monir Hussain, Mofazal Hussain, Md. Mizanur Rahman, Abyadullah Hassan, Ashraful Islam, Manik Miah, Nobi Hussain, Waliul Ullah, Hazarat Ali, Sofikul Islam, Furkan Ali, Mominul Haque and Md Anwar Hussain.
The chief minister further mentioned in his post, “Ever since the tense situation in Bangladesh erupted, we have maintained a strict vigil and caught 108 illegal infiltrators in the period.”
Meanwhile, Sarma earlier asserted that although some of the Bangladeshi infiltrators managed to get Aadhaar cards, they cannot enroll themselves in the voter list.
“There is no chance that people cross illegally the international border from Bangladesh and get themselves enrolled in the voter list in Assam because we have caught many people who illegally entered Indian territory and they were pushed back within a few hours. Most of the infiltrators were arrested in the morning around 5 AM and before 9 AM in the morning, they were pushed back to the neighbouring country. In two or three hours, they can not register themselves in the voter list,” he added.
However, the chief minister sees no harm to remain double vigilant in this matter.
“We have decided to take a slew of measures against the detection of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh because there might have been possibilities that a few infiltrators could not be arrested by the security personnel,” he added.
