Assam govt enhancing waterways with new upgrades

GUWAHATI, Nov 4: The Assam government is modernising the state’s waterways by enhancing safety, infrastructure, and connectivity, according to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Monday.

These initiatives are being implemented by the Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society (AIWTDS).

“The Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society (AIWTDS) is modernising Assam’s waterways by enhancing safety, infrastructure, and connectivity. Key advancements include the establishment of new regulatory bodies, night navigation, and the upgrading of the fleet with 20 steel catamarans,” the CMO wrote on X.

The Jibondinga Scheme has also been introduced to equip boat operators with marine engines and safety gear.

“As per the directives of HCM Dr. @himantabiswa, @CSAssam_, Dr Ravi Kota recently held a meeting with AIWTDS to review the progress of these initiatives,” the CMO stated.

The CMO provided details indicating that AIWTDS aims to enhance passenger ferry services and infrastructure while strengthening the state’s inland water transport framework.

Key project components include the establishment of the Assam Inland Water Transport Regulatory Authority and the Assam Inland Waterways Company Ltd.

“Night navigation has been initiated, benefiting over 8.5 lakh passengers,” the CMO reported.

To modernise infrastructure, a total of 20 advanced steel catamarans have been added to the fleet, which also includes three search and rescue vessels, three tugboats, and three survey boats.

Additionally, 840 marine engines and life-saving gear have been provided to country boat operators under the Jibondinga scheme.

“A fixed terminal has been constructed in Guwahati, with modular terminals established at North Guwahati, Umananda, Neamati, and Aphalamukh,” the CMO concluded.
