AGARTALA, Dec 1: ILS Hospital in Agartala has temporarily suspended its services for Bangladeshi patients following protests over recent incidents in Bangladesh, including attacks on Hindu minorities and alleged desecration of the Indian national flag.
The decision was made after a group of protestors staged a demonstration outside the hospital earlier today. ILS Hospital and the Cancer Hospital in Agartala typically treat over 100 Bangladeshi patients each month, but this move is set to disrupt the medical access for those who cross the border seeking healthcare.

A protestor present at the demonstration stated, “As Indians, we cannot remain silent about the atrocities being reported from Bangladesh. Attacks on the Hindu minority community and acts of disrespect toward our national flag are unacceptable. While the political situation in Bangladesh is an internal matter, such actions affect us deeply, and we must stand in solidarity with our people.”
The protestor further alleged that children in Bangladesh were being indoctrinated to disrespect the Indian flag and condemned the slogans and actions of extremist groups in the neighboring country. “We approached the hospital management, and they agreed to suspend services for Bangladeshi patients as a symbolic protest. This is not about religion or targeting any community; it is about standing up for justice and dignity,” the protestor added.
In response to the protest, ILS Hospital CEO Dr Gautam Kundu said, “We understand and support the sentiments expressed by the protestors. After considering their concerns, we have decided to suspend services for Bangladeshi patients until the situation improves. This includes shutting down our dedicated desk for Bangladeshi patients. While the number of such patients had already declined in recent months, this step is being taken to respect the sentiments of the people.”
The hospital’s decision reflects growing tensions between the two countries amid rising concerns over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh and the reported disrespect shown to Indian national symbols.
