GUWAHATI, July 26: On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, deputy commissioner of Tawang, Kesang Ngurup Damo, paid floral tribute to the brave soldiers who made supreme sacrifice on the line of duty protecting the motherland in Kargil war. He also felicitated a few Kargil war veterans present on the occasion at Tawang war memorial.
Commander Tawang Brigade Brigadier NM Bendigeri along with other officers from the brigade also laid wreaths in honour of the war heroes.
Later DC Tawang along with commander and other officers attended the inaugural function of the Independence Day Cup Football Tournament organised at Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium, Tawang.
Chief guest of the occasion, Dr Rikya Lhavoe Rinpoche kicked off the tournament. The tournament was organised by District football Association, Tawang and Tawang Brigade in collaboration with district administration and Tawang District Sports Association under the aegis of Arunachal Pradesh Football Association. 30 boys’ teams and 6 girls’ teams are participating in the tournament.
Speaking at the inaugural function, commander Tawang Brigade, Brig NM Bendigeri, Sena Medal expressed his happiness on the good participation of the teams, he called it a tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their life for the country and said that youths should come forward and join the army to serve the nation.
DC Tawang in his speech remembered the Kargil heroes and encouraged the youths to join Indian defence forces. He further said this kind of activities keeps our youths physically and mentally fit to face any challenges, he also mentioned about the exemplary bonhomie between army and civilians in Tawang stating that the public of Tawang are always behind the army for support.
The chairman of the tournament’s organising committee, Namgey Tsering conveyed his gratitude to all for making this tournament successful.
The opening match was played between Tawang United Football Club and Nguiphu Charitable Society Rho team. Tawang United Football Club won by scoring 3 goals against 1 goal by NCS Rho.
