‘Assamese just not a mere mother tongue’

NAGAON, Jan 23: Dr Sarat Borkatoki, the newly elected president of the Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha, emphasized the importance of the Assamese language in his presidential address at the 28th biennial session of Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha held at Misa in Kaliabor here on Thursday.

While addressing the open session of district unit of the literary organisation, Dr Borkatoki said, “Assamese is not just a mere mother tongue, but the soul and voice of wisdom of every Assamese person”.

He expressed concern over the lack of interest in reading books among the Assamese people and stressed the need to promote the language and literature.

He also emphasized the importance of reviving and promoting the other indigenous languages, which are an integral part of Assam’s cultural heritage.

Dr Borkatoki called upon the state government to take steps to recognise and promote these languages.

He also stressed the need for writers to adapt to the changing times and to explore new paths in literature.

Dr Borkatoki said that the Sahitya Sabha would take steps to promote new writers, publish books in regional languages, and protect intellectual property rights.

The session was attended by several prominent literary figures and scholars, who participated in discussions on various topics related to literature and language.
