KHERONI, April 3: A lighthearted picnic turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Wednesday afternoon at the Panimur picnic spot in West Karbi Anglong district when a young boy went missing in the waters of the Kapili River near Panimur waterfall.
The missing youth has been identified as Anish Chetri, a Class 11 student of Adarsh Sr. Secondary School, Kheroni Charali, West Karbi Anglong.

Anish, along with four friends- two girls and two boys had set out for a picnic from Dikhlem and Kherelajan villages in the Hawaipur mauza, under the jurisdiction of Kheroni Police Station, West Karbi Anglong.
The group, traveling on scooters and motorcycles, arrived at the popular picnic spot in the afternoon.
However, the outing took a devastating turn when Anish slipped and fell into the river while bathing, disappearing beneath the water.
According to eyewitnesses, Anish’s friends immediately raised the alarm and contacted his family.
His family and relatives rushed to the scene and informed the Jerikingding Police Station.
Acting swiftly, the police summoned the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to initiate a rescue operation.
Teams from both the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived at the location, but the onset of darkness forced them to suspend the search for the night.
Authorities have confirmed that the rescue operation resumed early on Thursday morning, April 3, as efforts continue to locate Anish.
The incident has left the local community in a state of shock and sorrow, with many anxiously awaiting updates on the search for the missing teenager.
The tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by natural water bodies, especially during recreational outings.
