DIPHU, April 8: Fire that emerged from clearing of forests gutted a house of Lunse Engti of Joyram Engti village, Koilamati, destroying the roof and bamboo walls of the house on Tuesday noon hours.
The incident occurred near Chokihola Police Station in Karbi Anglong.
The eyewitness said villagers of the adjoining village set fire to clear jungle to start Jhum cultivation (slash and burn cultivation) for the next sowing season on a hill farm. The fire, fueled by the dry leaves and twigs spread in the nearby areas leading to Lunse Engti’s house, which was close to the jungle. The thatch roof and bamboo walls quicky caught fire down quickly including stored paddy and rice, were burned.
The timely intervention by the villagers managed to stop the fire from causing further damage to the house, the villagers said.
Engti and his wife, Kasang Kropi, were the only members in the family. As they are poor, the villagers have appealed to the authority of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to extend immediate relief to them.
