GUWAHATI, April 28: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the closing ceremony of the 12th Senior National Rugby 7s Championship 2025 on Monday at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.
According to an official statement, the Governor lauded the championship as more than just a sporting event, describing it as “a powerful exposition of youth energy, discipline, teamwork, and dedication.”
He praised the participating athletes for their exceptional display of sportsmanship and competitive spirit throughout the tournament.
Highlighting the importance of sports beyond physical fitness, Governor Acharya emphasised that games like rugby instill critical life skills such as strategic thinking, resilience, and team coordination.
He reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of sports as a transformative force in nation-building.
The Governor also commended the Assam Government’s proactive efforts in promoting sports through initiatives such as the Khel Maharan event, development of rural training centres, construction of new stadiums, and financial support schemes aimed at nurturing local talent.
Encouraging the youth to view both victories and defeats as learning opportunities, Governor Acharya noted that such experiences build the foundation for long-term success.
He also extended appreciation to Rugby India and the Assam Rugby Association for their role in successfully organising the national championship and promoting the spirit of the game.
The final match of the tournament was played between West Bengal and Haryana, with West Bengal emerging victorious.
Several dignitaries were present at the event, including former Gauhati High Court judge Justice Arup Kumar Goswami, West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Rugby India President Rahul Bose, Department of Sports & Youth Welfare Secretary Kaushar Hilaly, Rugby India CEO Ankush Arora, Executive President of Assam Rugby Association Bipulananda Pathak, and senior officials of the Sports Department.
