Arunachal’s Nawang Chonzom and Gumin Megu appointed to CAU Board

ITANAGAR, May 2: In a significant development that has brought immense pride to the people of Arunachal Pradesh, two of the state’s prominent figures, Nawang Chonzom and Gumin Megu, have been appointed as members of the esteemed Board of Management (BOM) of the Central Agricultural University (CAU) in Imphal, Manipur.

Their appointment to the board for a three-year term was confirmed in an official statement from the university.

Nawang Chonzom, a dedicated social and community worker from Gyangkhar village in Tawang, and Gumin Megu, a model progressive farmer from Sika-Bamin village in East Siang district, will both serve as integral members of the BOM.

Their induction into this prestigious body reflects their exceptional contributions to rural development and agriculture in Arunachal Pradesh.

Chonzom has been at the forefront of empowering rural women in the state.

With her deep commitment to improving the lives of women in her community, she has been actively involved in training women in tailoring, professional farming, and organic agricultural practices.

Chonzom is particularly noted for her work in educating farmers about the harmful effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, advocating for sustainable and eco-friendly farming techniques.

She currently leads a women-run Farmer Producer Company (FPC) with 120 active members, providing a shining example of women-led rural entrepreneurship.

On the other hand, Gumin Megu has earned recognition as a progressive farmer who practices integrated farming across a variety of sectors.

His farming activities span a wide range of agricultural and horticultural practices, including fish farming (5300 sq m), eri sericulture (4700 sq m), paddy cultivation (20,000 sq m), maize farming (15,000 sq m), arecanut plantation (4300 sq m), honeybee rearing (2 boxes), and bamboo cultivation.

His diversified approach to farming has not only helped him achieve success but has also inspired other farmers in the region to adopt more sustainable and multi-dimensional farming practices.

Both Chonzom and Megu’s appointments to the Board of Management of CAU mark a significant milestone for Arunachal Pradesh, as their collective experience in social work and progressive farming is expected to play a vital role in shaping the future of agriculture in the state.
