GUWAHATI, May 22: Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Thursday attended the inauguration of the newly redeveloped Haibargaon Railway Station in Nagaon district, according to an official statement.
The station has been upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a virtual event that saw the inauguration of 103 railway stations across 18 states and Union Territories.
The scheme aims to modernize railway stations across the country by introducing improved amenities, local cultural elements, and facilities for divyangjans, while also promoting eco-friendly practices.
Terming the event a historic moment, Governor Acharya expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for including Haibargaon in the scheme.
He said the redevelopment represents the collective aspirations of the people of Assam.
According to the official statement, the Governor noted that Indian Railways has transformed over the past decade into an instrument of national unity and regional development.
The revamped Haibargaon station features Assamese cultural motifs, including the Gamosa, Bihu dance elements, and Ahom architecture, in line with the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
He also stated that the station’s redevelopment would boost regional connectivity and tourism, serving as a gateway to destinations such as Kaziranga National Park, Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, and Bordowa Than.
Additionally, 50 more stations across Assam are set to be upgraded under the scheme.
The Haibargaon station now incorporates eco-friendly features like solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and green building practices, supporting the Green India and Swachh Bharat missions.
Governor Acharya emphasised the impact of the ‘Act East, Act Fast, Act First’ policy in transforming the Northeast through enhanced connectivity and infrastructure.
He called on citizens to contribute to the cleanliness and upkeep of the new facility, describing it as a shared dream realized through collective effort.
The event was attended by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, Assam Minister for Science, Technology and Climate Change Keshab Mahanta, MLAs Rupak Sharma, Jitu Goswami, and Shashikant Das, along with Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava and Lumding Division DRM Sameer Lohani.
