GUWAHATI, May 25:Pathik, one of Assam’s leading NGOs committed to health awareness and cancer prevention, organized its Seventh Anti-Tobacco and Live Green Awareness Campaign today with a Cyclathon, under the banner of the Fit India Mission.
The rally was flagged off at 6:30 am by Sushmita Goswami, President of the Guwahati Press Club, in front of the Sports Authority of India Stadium. Held in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India, the event aims to promote a tobacco-free and healthier lifestyle across all age groups.
For the past 21 years, Pathik has been actively working to raise awareness about cancer and other non-communicable diseases, focusing primarily on the harmful effects of tobacco. The rising use of gutkha, pan masala, cigarettes, and other tobacco products among the youth has led to a concerning spike in cancer cases. In response, Pathik has employed creative outreach strategies to educate the masses — from children to the elderly — about the dangers of tobacco use.
The Cyclathon, now a popular part of the campaign, saw 150 enthusiastic participants from diverse age groups who were awarded certificates and medals for their commitment to the cause.
Other key awareness activities planned as part of this year’s anti-tobacco campaign include:Street plays and mime performances, wall and footbridge painting, walkathons, corporate sensitization programs and a state-level drawing competition on Sunday, June 1 at Kalakshetra Grounds, which includes four participation categories with prize money awards.

Speaking on the occasion, a Pathik spokesperson reiterated the NGO’s mission:
“Our only aim is a tobacco-free, cancer-free world. Together, we can achieve it through awareness and action.”
Through sustained grassroots efforts, community events, and creative campaigns, Pathik continues to play a vital role in advocating for public health and a tobacco-free society in Assam.
