KHERONI, July 2: The Assam government is set to launch a fresh eviction drive along the Assam-Nagaland border, specifically targeting encroachments in the Bokajan–Lahorijan stretch of National Highway 39, which falls under the Bokajan Revenue Circle in Karbi Anglong district.
The move follows reports of a growing number of encroachers setting up makeshift shelters along this vital highway, which connects Dimapur to Golaghat town.
This will be the second major eviction operation in the region after an earlier drive conducted at Dudu Colony.
Officials noted that numerous individuals have been seen occupying the highway corridor with personal belongings and temporary structures, prompting renewed action from the administration.
Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly Numal Momin, who inspected the area ahead of the operation, issued a firm warning against illegal occupation of government land.
Reiterating the state’s uncompromising policy on encroachments, he stated, “Not a single inch of land will be given to doubtful outsiders.”
He further added that the residences of individuals found to be involved in illicit activities, particularly drug peddling, would be demolished without delay.
The planned operation is part of a wider statewide campaign spearheaded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Under his leadership, the Assam government has conducted eviction drives across all districts, sending a clear message that illegal occupation of land will not be tolerated.
Officials claim that these measures have already acted as a deterrent, dissuading further encroachments.
During his visit, Momin also reviewed the ongoing issue of waterlogging along stretches of NH-39 near the inter-state border.
The persistent flooding has reportedly caused substantial damage to roads and disrupted traffic.
He directed the Chief Engineer of Assam, along with officials from the Bokajan and Barpathar Public Works Divisions, to carry out immediate repairs and initiate construction measures to prevent further damage.
The Deputy Speaker also stated that the government is committed to reclaiming all encroached land in the Lahorijan area, including both sides of NH-39 and adjacent government properties.
He assured that no unauthorized occupation would be allowed to persist.
Momin was accompanied during the visit by nominated Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) Mukut Mahanta, Kakumoni Saikia, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Bokajan, and senior officers from law enforcement agencies.
Their presence underscored the administration’s readiness to implement the eviction drive with coordinated support from civil and police authorities.
With preparations underway and official directives issued, the upcoming eviction operation is expected to commence shortly, marking yet another step in the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to reclaim state land and curb illegal settlement along sensitive border zones.
