MORIGAON, July 17: With less than eight months remaining for the 2026 Assembly elections, an open rift between Morigaon MLA Ramakanta Deuri and Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Jiban Ch Konwar has triggered internal unrest within the BJP’s Morigaon unit.

According to reports, the conflict came to light during a party meeting held at Bihutoli ground on Tuesday evening.

The meeting was part of a statewide rally organised by the BJP to express gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the eviction drive against illegal encroachers across Assam.

Both MLA Deuri and CEM Konwar had been invited to the rally by Morigaon district BJP president Ramprasad Sarkar.

However, tensions escalated when MLA Ramakanta Deuri publicly rebuked the district BJP president for inviting CEM Konwar to the event.

Eyewitnesses reported that Deuri, upon seeing Konwar present at the venue, questioned the BJP president, saying, “Why did you invite me to a programme where the CEM of TAC is attending?”

He proceeded to openly criticise Sarkar in front of party workers.

The incident has raised eyebrows across political circles in the district, with party workers expressing concern over the public nature of the dispute.

Sources within the party indicated that the MLA views the CEM as a political rival and potential opponent in the upcoming polls.

The public outburst has led to speculation that the Morigaon BJP is facing a division, with indications of factionalism between supporters of the two leaders.

The confrontation, which took place in full view of BJP karyakartas, has reportedly sparked controversy and internal debate within the party ahead of its preparations for the 2026 elections.
