DIPHU, July 17: With the support of the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM) and her Self Help Group (SHG), Kareng Lekthepi of Maran Lekthe village under Rongmongwe Block has transformed her life and livelihood through livestock rearing.
This was stated in an official release issued by ASRLM highlighting her success story.
Kareng, who once lived with an annual household income of just ₹25,000, joined the Rongchingri SHG on October 18, 2019.
A loan of ₹15,000 from the SHG marked the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey in goat and backyard poultry farming.
Encouraged by initial success, she went on to avail a total of ₹45,000 in financial support from the group, besides benefiting from bank linkages and Community Investment Funds (CIF) facilitated by ASRLM.
To build sustainability and adopt scientific methods, Kareng underwent structured training under the Pashu Pathsala programme in goat rearing, poultry farming, and animal health management.
“Learning proper techniques changed everything for me,” she said.
According to the release, her annual income now stands at around ₹75,000 from livestock and an additional ₹15,000 from paddy cultivation.
Her enterprise also provides employment to two others in the village.
Kareng is also availing benefits from various government schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), and MGNREGA.
She receives regular veterinary and agricultural support to further boost her efforts.
Expressing her aspirations, she said, “I want to take an individual loan, expand my business, and inspire other women to become self-reliant.”
Kareng Lekthepi’s journey stands as a testament to how grassroots support and structured rural livelihood programmes can enable women to break the cycle of poverty and emerge as self-sufficient entrepreneurs.
