GUWAHATI, JULY 26: As part of its continuous campaign to evict illegally occupied government land, the Assam government is going to initiate a new eviction drive in Samaguri of Nagaon district. This operation comes on the heels of a similar exercise recently undertaken in Uriamghat under Golaghat district.
On Friday, Samaguri Revenue Circle Officer gave official eviction notices to Belguri Kachari village residents who live under mouza Khatowal. The notice ordered occupants to leave the encroached land plots at once.

The encroached plots are part of government-designated “grazing reserve” land, specifically covered by survey dag numbers 3, 528, 506, 505, and 604. The reserved land is intended for public use and environmental conservation, but it is alleged to have been converted to agricultural use by local settlers without permission.
The notice stipulates that in case of non-voluntary vacating of the land, eviction proceedings will be initiated according to standard government norms and legal procedures. Officials cautioned that stringent action would be initiated against defaulters. Eviction campaigns of such a kind have been increasingly common over the last few months in a number of Assam districts.
Although the administration insists that such measures are being taken for the safeguarding of public land, they have frequently provoked opposition from the local populace and received political flak.
